I actually happen to be taking a class on the Pentateuch (first 5 books of the Old Testament) right now! I am by no means an expert, but I do find it interesting to study. Unless someone is a fundamentalist, Christians and Jews do not take the Bible literally word for word. They know that is not the direct word of God. The Old Testament is actually comprised of 4 separate authors who were concerned with their religious message as opposed to their literal message, so there is a lot of symbolism that should not be taken literally (example. God made the world in 7 days).

Also, agreed with Flippin-- this is a good discusssion!

Well, what I can't seem to understand is why couldn't God have predicted that the Bible would be very irrational in the future.

I mean, why couldn't he had said millions of years instead of 7 days. If he really wanted you to know the truth, shouldn't he had been literal?

Like I said before, it isn't supposed to be literal. I know...it sounds crazy! But we are supposed to understand the symbols and illusions in the text-- 7 means completion and perfection, 40 means a time of transition in which there is teaching and testing, 6 means so close to perfection that it is evil. Think of Shakespeare-- why didn't he just said "Do you love me?" instead of "How doth though love thee?" It is the language they chose to use to portray their story.

Couldn't have said it better. So I guess the argument is over.

Well some of us are Christians who couldn't help themselves but jump into the debate... ( in the most polite way possible of course)

...No... That subject is highly debatable. Some people will believe differently than others. I still think it was a dick-move to not make the Bible literal. (That is if it was the word of God, which I doubt.)

Debating religion is fun and all I don't think this is really working for a thread meant to be an atheist club.

Perhaps we should start with the question of what were the deciding factors for you that made you come to the conclusion there was no god?

And so the flame war continues.

Well, I used to be a strong Christian. Church every Sunday, I think this is why I always want to debate religion because I basically know both sides. Well anyways...

One day I just came to a realization that there is a lot of evidence against religion. AG was another thing that contributed to my conversion. I use to debate as a Christian but I's always get out-witted. Then I did a lot of research... A lot. I concluded that supposed morals in the Bible were not morals I wanted. I also found a lot of contradictions in the bible. This made me realize that the bible was written by man.

In conclusion, there is just a ton of evidence supporting evolution.

Oh and don't think it's easy being an atheist, especially in Tennessee. I still haven't came out yet, for fear of being bullied or hassled. I've only told like 4 people so far. I'm still pondering of how I will tell my parents. :P

Your turn Mage.

It is the word of God, but not the words said by God. I hope you get what that says. The authors who wrote down the word are divinely inspired, but as human they are not perfect and hence make mistakes. I do not think it is right to blame the imperfections of the Bible on God but rather the humans themselves.

And so the flame war continues.

I hope you are not referring to Flippin and I as we are having a nice discussion.

*sadly leaves thread* as I am a Christian But... if anyone wants some nice discussion (aka Flipin) I shall gladly come back

No, the debate, not flame war, continues. Those are two completely different things. Plus, stop posting pointless stuff like that. How about you actually contribute to the thread.
