I don't think people that live in the original states 13 states talk differently than people who live elsewhere in the united states. hope that clears thing up.
Well, I'd say that you're wrong, there are subtle differences between the way people in different cities (let alone different states) talk and so it's only logical to assume that those differences carry over to different states. Words that mean W in X could mean Y in Z. Also, some words are unique to one state or a group of states - we see this quite prevalently in foods (usually due to different slang names or brand names becoming the catch-word for all foods of that type).
True, not to mentioned accents. Its pretty easy to tell if someone is from the south based on their accent. And as for words, I can't think of any that may be different between cities at this point, I'll have to look it up.
On the topic of accents, I always thought everyone in the US spoke a different language when I was 3 or so. But they only have different accents.
Spanish I think is becoming more and more wide spread in the States. It also being seen on packing and what not.
